If you have just joined a beautician or makeup course in India, one of the first things you are handed is a long product list. This guide turns that list into a clear shopping plan: what each product is for, which items you need on day one and which can wait, what the official skill-council curriculum asks for, and what a working student kit costs at today's prices.

What does the official makeup course curriculum ask for?

In India, beauty and makeup courses under the Skill India system follow qualification packs written by the Beauty & Wellness Sector Skill Council (B&WSSC). The model curriculum for the Professional Makeup Artist qualification (QP code BWS/Q0306, NSQF Level 4) lists the makeup products and tools trainees work with:

Foundations, Concealer, Powder, Blusher, Eyeshadow, Mascara, Eye pencil, Liquid liner, Lip liner, Lipstick, Lip gloss, Corrective makeup/ Colored concealer, Brushes, Applicators

The entry-level Assistant Beauty Therapist qualification (BWS/Q0101, NSQF Level 3) also includes a module on performing simple makeup services. Private academies and textbook-based courses usually give a longer list that adds skin prep, compact, highlighter and contour.

The complete beautician makeup kit list (20 items)

This is a typical 20-product list from a beautician course textbook, grouped the way you will actually use it on a client's face.

Which products do you need on day one?

If your budget is tight, start with the items marked "Day one" above. They let you practise a complete everyday look: prep, base, brows, eyes, cheeks, lips and setting. Add loose powder, toner, highlighter, contour, lip liner and lip gloss as the course moves into bridal, party and photo makeup.

What a student makeup kit costs: live prices

Here is a working student kit built from the Glohaze catalogue. It covers 15 of the 20 items on the list (one 5-in-1 palette book covers blush, highlighter and contour together) plus a 10-piece brush set. Prices update automatically from our catalogue.

Prices checked October 20, 2026 from the Glohaze catalogue. Final price at checkout may differ.

Not in our catalogue: cleanser, toner, moisturiser, loose powder and lip liner. Pick these up from a pharmacy or any skincare brand you trust; a gentle cleanser and a light moisturiser for your own skin type are enough for practice.

Buying for practice on other people: shade tips

  • Concealer and foundation: you will practise on classmates with different skin tones, so buy at least two concealer shades (one lighter, one deeper) rather than one that only matches you. Our liquid concealer comes in 12 shades.
  • Lipstick: a rosy-brown nude and a deep red cover most practice looks on Indian skin. Add a berry or wine later for bridal and evening work.
  • Eyeshadow: a neutral matte palette teaches blending and crease work better than a glitter palette.
  • Brushes: a 10-piece set covers foundation, powder, blush, contour, eyeshadow and blending brushes.

Hygiene rules every beauty student should follow

When you work on other people, hygiene is not optional. These habits come straight from eye-health and cosmetic-safety guidance:

  • Never share eye makeup directly between people. The American Academy of Ophthalmology advises never sharing eye makeup, even with family or close friends. Use disposable mascara wands and scrape product onto a clean palette instead of applying straight from the tube.
  • Never wet products with saliva or water to soften them, a point the US FDA makes in its eye cosmetic safety advice.
  • Sharpen or wipe pencils between clients. Sharpening removes the used surface of eye and lip pencils.
  • Replace eye makeup about every three months, and throw it out after anyone using it has an eye infection.
  • Wash brushes regularly and use clean sponges for every person. See our guide to cleaning makeup brushes at home.

How to check that a cosmetic is safe and genuine

Under India's Cosmetics Rules, 2020, cosmetic labels must carry a batch number, a "use before" or expiry date, and (on most pack sizes) an ingredients list in descending order. Several makeup products also have mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards specifications, including cosmetic pencils (IS 9832), lipstick (IS 9875), liquid foundation (IS 14318) and kajal (IS 15154). Before you buy:

  1. Check the pack is sealed.
  2. Find the batch number and expiry or "use before" date.
  3. Read the ingredients list if you or your clients have sensitivities.
  4. Avoid loose, unlabelled products, especially for eyes.

The short version

A beautician-course makeup kit needs skin prep (cleanser, moisturiser, primer), base (foundation, concealer, compact), eyes (brow pencil, eyeshadow, eyeliner, kajal, mascara), cheeks (blush, plus highlighter and contour later), lips (lipstick, plus liner and gloss later), a setting spray, and brushes. The official B&WSSC Professional Makeup Artist curriculum lists foundation, concealer, powder, blusher, eyeshadow, mascara, eye pencil, liquid liner, lip liner, lipstick, lip gloss, colour corrector, brushes and applicators. Start with the day-one items, buy two concealer shades for practice, and never share eye products between people.
