A brush that has not been washed in a month holds oil, dead skin, bacteria and old product. It also stops blending properly, which is usually the real reason a base looks patchy. Washing brushes takes five minutes and roughly doubles how long they last.
How often to wash what

The five-minute wash
- Run lukewarm water over the bristles only, with the brush pointing downward. Never let water run into the metal ferrule - that dissolves the glue and the brush starts shedding.
- Swirl the bristles in a coin-sized drop of mild shampoo or baby shampoo in your palm.
- Rinse until the water runs clear. Foundation brushes may need two rounds.
- Squeeze gently from base to tip with a clean towel and reshape the head with your fingers.
- Dry flat with the bristles hanging over the edge of a table or shelf, never upright in a jar.
Between deep washes
For a quick clean between uses, swirl the brush on a clean dry tissue or a textured cloth to remove surface product, or use a spray brush cleanser and wipe. This takes ten seconds and keeps eyeshadow colours from turning muddy.
Drying times and humid weather
Dense foundation brushes take 6 to 8 hours to dry, and longer in monsoon. Wash them at night so they are ready by morning. Do not use a hairdryer on hot - heat warps synthetic bristles permanently. A fan on low, with brushes lying flat, is safe and much faster.
When to replace a brush
- Bristles shed onto your face every time you use it.
- The head has lost its shape even after reshaping when damp.
- The ferrule is loose or the handle rattles.
- Foundation brushes: 1 to 2 years with weekly washing. Eye brushes often last several years.
Sponges are different: replace them every 3 months regardless of how well you wash them, since they cannot be fully sanitised.
