Wedding guest makeup in India has to do four difficult things at once: photograph well under flash, survive several hours of heat, stay put through dinner and dancing, and still look like you. Most of that is decided in the base and setting steps, not the eyeshadow.

The flash photography rule
Flash reflects off light-reflecting particles, which is why some people look grey or ghostly in wedding photographs. Two causes: a foundation lighter than your neck, and heavy translucent powder or SPF-loaded primer across the face. Match your base to your neck, keep powder to the T-zone, and put shimmer only on the top of the cheekbone and inner corner of the eye - never across the whole face.
The routine
- Prep an hour early. Moisturise, let it absorb, then prime. Makeup applied on freshly moisturised skin slides.
- Base in thin layers. Two thin passes of a 24-hour matte foundation beat one thick one.
- Conceal and correct. Tap concealer only where needed and press, do not rub.
- Set properly. Powder the T-zone, under the eyes and around the nose. These are the three places makeup breaks first.
- Eyes to last. Waterproof mascara, smudge-proof kajal set with matte shadow, and a clean line from the Precision Eyeliner Pen.
- Lips that survive dinner. Line, fill, blot, reapply. A long-wear matte is worth the slight dryness for a ten-hour event.
- Lock it. Finish with a setting spray and let it air-dry without fanning.

Timing your day
If the function starts at 7 pm, apply makeup between 5 and 5:30 pm. Makeup settles into skin for the first 30 to 45 minutes and looks its best after that, not immediately. Applying at the last minute is why bases look powdery in the earliest photographs of the evening.
